UbuntuHSPA Solid on Intrepid Beta

October 19th, 2008

I was pleasantly surprised to find that Extel’s HSPA offering works out-of-the-box with the current Ubuntu Intrepid beta. The CLI fiddling of the past is no longer needed – Network Manager takes care of everything.

After losing ADSL for almost a week, I decided I needed a fallback solution that was better than dialup. Once you have activated the SIM through Exetels customer web portal, plugged it into the supplied Huawei E169 modem, and plugged the modem into Intrepid, Network Manager gives you a choice of presets, including the Optus 3G network that Exetel uses. All that remains is to set the APN to ‘exetel1′ (see below) and you are done. The modem connected and simply worked right away!

I haven’t tried on 8.04. I suggest upgrading to Intrepid first.
